Blessed Is the Nation - Psalm 33:12a

In November 2016, I updated my Facebook cover photo to include this quote from Psalms 33:12a: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” Many believe that for the first two centuries of this country’s existence, America has, in deed, been the recipient of God’s blessings. For one, our nation was founded on biblical principles, with the ten commandments playing a significant role in the establishment of the constitution and laws of our land.

Secondly, America has been a great supporter and a friend to the nation of Israel, which is a primary reason why God has blessed us.  When God called out Abram to establish the nation of Israel, He told Abram: “I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you” (Genesis 12:3a). America has been a blessing to Israel for many, many years, and God has been faithful in keeping the promise He made thousands of years ago.

God’s blessing on our country has allowed us freedoms beyond what people groups in most other countries enjoy, not to mention prosperity and financial benefits. Whether or not you believe in God, you have benefited from these blessings. Though you may claim your prosperity or accomplishments are the result of your own education, hard work or entrepreneurial acumen, the privileges and freedoms of our society have allowed you to prosper.

There are many in our nation who don’t comprehend what having God’s blessing has done for our country. If they did, they would be fearing what lies ahead for America as we gradually move from underneath the umbrella of God’s blessings to the umbrella of His cursing. As our political leaders compromise and gradually undermine our moral laws and hold a lesser allegiance to Israel, that’s exactly what is happening.

Have there been times when America has had its setbacks and struggles, and individuals have felt the financial crunch of recessions? Absolutely. Most likely, though, a close look at the circumstances might reveal those particular times in our nation’s history were the result of spiritual rebellion or a demise of America’s moral principles. By forsaking God’s laws and truths, and exchanging them for the advancement of personal rights, our nation has watered down its foundational values.

God’s eternal Word and principles are constant and never changing; therefore, His values can’t be compromised based on personal circumstances. However, most Americans consider the Bible to be archaic and out of touch with reality. Therefore, we have turned to a “make the rules as we go” philosophy.  “Right” and “wrong” are defined according to our “in the moment” circumstances. Situational ethics and the reversion to a hedonistic society, wherein Americans believe that personal pleasure is the ultimate goal, are sending our culture into a moral decline.

Every time a law is altered or voted out based on a value that is considered “politically correct” instead of “biblically correct,” we move one step closer to drawing God’s curse on our country. That, my friends, is something to be feared.
