Why Do Christians Suffer?

By Dr. Charles A. Whipple, © May 9, 1997

  • Because of our pride-filled nature (II Corinthians 12:1-9)

  • So we can comfort others, especially those who go through similar circumstances (II Corinthians 1:3-6)

  • Because a Godly testimony for Christ costs something (II Timothy 3:12; Philippians 1:29)

  • So that our faith will be strengthened in the Lord (I Peter 4:12-19)

  • So that we can mature and learn patience (Romans 5:3; I Peter 1:6-7)

  • Sometimes just to learn common sense (II Timothy 1:7-8)

  • For the purpose of gaining a hunger for heaven (II Corinthians 5:1-4; Philippians 1:23-24)

  • Sometimes just to give our bodies time to rest and heal (Philippians 2:25-30)

  • Because the Lord chastens His children (Hebrews 12:6-10)
